Layyah city situated in Pakistan (formerly spelled as Leiah) is bounded by North by Bhakhar District, to the East by Jhang District and the Indus River flows to it's western side across which lies City Dera Ghazi Khan and to the South District MuzaffarGarh. Layyah was included in District ranking in July 1982 as before that it was being administered by the authorities of District MuzaffarGarh. Layyah has an area of 6291 square Kilometers and comprises three Tehsils; Layyah itself, Chaubara and Karor-Laal-Eisan.

The word "Leiah" itself is believed to be derived from 'Leian' in Saraiki Language a plural form of 'Lai' which is a name of tree found in Layyah. In former times, the land of Layyah was mostly covered by sand dunes and trees named "Leian". Therefore, this place known as Leian...Leiah....Layyah afterwards
Majority of people in Layyah are native speaker of Saraiki or Punjabi language, although Urdu is widely understood and spoken. The medium of education is Urdu and English. The district had a populatin of 1,520,951 of which only 20.47% are urban in 2005.
